Electric Bicycle Technology

Choose the electric bicycle for you!

Electric bicycles are becoming more and more popular in today's society. Not only are they incredibly easy to use, but you can go further distances on your bicycle without expending massive amounts of energy and time. However, there are various types of electric bicycles to choose from, so how do you choose which one is right for you? Motors place a vital role in the different types of ebikes.

The two main types of ebike motors include:

  • Geared Hub Motors
  • Gearless Hub Motors

Geared hub motors have internal planetary gears that help transfer power from the motor to the wheels. Due to the internal gearing, these types of motors provide superb amounts of torque, meaning they can climb hills easier and take-off faster. Less wattage is required to get this type of motor turning and ebikes with this type of motor are generally lightweight and small.

Gearless hub motors, or direct-drive hub motors, function by sending alternating current signals to magnetic windings inside the motor, which cause it to turn. While corrosion can eventually lead to the destruction of this type of battery, it can still last for many years, since it requires zero gearing and has no contact with moving parts. Gearless hub motors are also more capable of higher speeds.
